Last week: MAJOR PHILANTHROPY: MacKenzie Scott donated $4.2 billion the last four months to 384 chronically underfunded organizations addressing high poverty rates, food insecurity, and racial inequity. After giving away $1.7 billion to 116 nonprofits in July, Scott decided to “accelerate” her 2020 donations because of the pandemic’s “wrecking ball” effect on those already struggling. Whittling down 6,490 organizations to 384, with 438 “on hold for now,” Scott’s team took “a rigorous data-driven approach towards identifying organizations with strong leadership and results.” Nothing was left to chance. Nonprofits must now ask themselves if they’re capable of passing such a serious vetting.
