The Client

Children’s Home Society (CHS), one of Florida’s oldest private nonprofit organizations, provides services to children and families. These social services are aimed at building communities, protecting children at risk of abuse, neglect or abandonment, strengthening and stabilizing families, helping young people break the cycle of abuse and neglect, and finding safe, loving homes for children.

The Need

After 125 years of operation, CHS is looking to build a sustainable future that focuses on upstream impact to reduce the need for costly and poor outcome services such as foster care. The organization’s leadership sought to ensure a strong strategic plan was developed with engagement at all levels, from families to community members to staff to boards. They engaged Sharity to facilitate this statewide effort exploring their business model for the next 100 years.

The Project

The Partners for Safe Families pilot consists of three primary interventions: expert consultation, evidence-based domestic violence assessment, and intensive staff training with clinical supervision. It conceptualized an intensive training to provide child welfare staff with an understanding of how IPV impacted their cases. The training provides an in-depth overview of domestic violence concepts and theories, survivor support, and child welfare workers’ role.

The Result

Over the course of our collaboration, the Refuge has achieved the following milestones.

  • Sustainable fundraising — Raised 100 percent of capital campaign goal (US$4.2M raised to date). Doubled annual revenue and increased monthly giving by 70 percent. Secured US$750K in tourism funding.
  • Growth — Acquired two nonprofits including Carol Baskin’s high-profile Big Cat Rescue. Projected 50K new visitors annually.
  • Recognition — Named one of the top 10 percent of attractions worldwide in TripAdvisor’s 2023 Travelers’ Choice Winner. Filmed as part of a documentary to be shown at London’s Natural History Museum.
  • Advocacy — Passed the US Big Cat Safety Act in December 2022.
