How do I setup a monthly giving program?

Ask Me Anything Summary

How do I set up a monthly giving program? so we got a great question today about monthly giving. well, this is something that everybody really wants because, believe it or not, out of monthly givers, even if it’s just 25 or $50 a month, is where most major donors come from.

So how do you get somebody to go from giving a one time ask to giving monthly? well, this is where software is really, really helpful. so, we partner with harness, for instance, and they have those options on your donation portal, so that when you go out and you ask someone to help with something, they can either choose to give one time, start giving on a monthly basis, or even round up.

So they accept basically a pledge to cover the cost of something, and then it comes out of their account as they shop. that gets people used to giving to you on a regular basis.

The first thing you need to do, though, is figure out, what are those types of items that are lower costs that someone could fund? that’s a recurring expense of your organization or a recurring activity.

So, for instance, if you’re a domestic violence shelter, it might be for every month you’re going to ask them to sponsor one hotline call at $50. I have another client that has an equine therapy program, and so we’re actually getting monthly give donors to sponsor the pedicure of a horse, which is really the farrier, but we’re calling it the monthly pedicure, and that’s $55.

So be thinking about what are those monthly costs that you could go out and ask your donors to sponsor. but then make sure you’ve got the software platform to back that up, so it makes it really simple for the donor to integrate into your giving plan.

I hope that was helpful. make sure if you have any questions, or if you’d like to be introduced to harness just to check out their back end software, which is amazing, put a comment in the section below or you can direct message us, and we’d be happy to talk to you further about monthly giving.
